Strand Centre Featured on BBC News for Red Nose Day
We were proud to see the Strand Centre featured by BBC News as part of this year’s Red Nose Day coverage.
The article highlights how support from Comic Relief, through the CRCommunity programme delivered by Groundwork UK, is helping us respond to hardship in Dawlish — from providing a warm and welcoming space to supporting people through food, activities and community connection.
The coverage also reflects the many people who make the Strand Centre what it is — our volunteers, partners, and everyone who comes through our doors.
We’re incredibly grateful for the recognition, and proud to share our community’s story more widely.
SCT FOODBANK
We are dedicated to supporting the most vulnerable individuals and families in our community who are facing challenging times or are in financial need. Our mission is to fight hunger and provide hope to those who need it most.
We distribute weekly hampers valued at approximately £45 each, ensuring that families have access to essential food items.
Our ‘Meals at Home’ service ensures that local individuals who are unable to leave their homes receive the nourishment they need.
We also provide wholesome meals and hot drinks for the homeless, offering warmth and sustenance.
Together, we can make a difference—because no one should go hungry.
A Joyful Christmas for All
Each year, we ensure that up to 100 local residents who live alone experience the warmth and joy of the festive season. Our No More Lonely Christmases initiative invites them to a delightful three-course Christmas Day lunch, featuring a starter, turkey with all the trimmings and traditional Christmas pudding with cream (or custard). A vegetarian option is also available to cater to all dietary preferences.
Santa himself makes a special visit, bringing gifts for everyone.
Additionally, we provide bags of goodies to families where we know children might not receive much at Christmas.
Festive Open House:
That time between Boxing Day and New Year’s Eve can be very lonely and financially stressful for some, so we open our doors and invite residents to join us at The Strand Centre
Offer individuals and families companionship in a safe and warm space.
Provide engaging activities that keep everyones spirits high.
We offer free breakfast and lunch to support families struggling financially after Christmas, ensuring children have access to hot meals.
Together, we can make the holiday season a time of joy and togetherness for everyone.
REPAIR, REUSE & SUSTAINABILITY
We are committed to reducing waste and supporting practical environmental action in our community. As a Connector Member of Community Action Groups (CAG) Devon, we are part of a network helping communities take action on repair, reuse and sustainability across Devon.
We host regular Repair Cafés where volunteers help fix everyday items, from small electricals to well-loved toys, giving them a second life and keeping them out of landfill.
We work with local groups to promote reuse and support community-led sustainability initiatives.
Through our community café, we serve Fairtrade coffee and are exploring ways to source more local and sustainable food.
Together, we are building a more sustainable and resilient community in Dawlish.
